Recently, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment approved the "Joint Research on Ecological Protection and High Quality Development of the Yellow River Basin", led by Tsinghua University and with the Beijing International Ecological Economy Association as an important participant, focusing on the second sub project of the Yellow River Basin's new pollutant environmental risk prevention and control research. This study deeply implements Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization ideology and the important speech spirit General Secretary Xi Jinping gave at the symposium on promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, supporting the implementation of major strategic decisions of the Yellow River country and the battle for ecological protection and governance of the Yellow River.

At present, the base number of new pollutants in the Yellow River Basin is unclear and basic data is lacking. New pollutants have potential ecological and health risks. There is an urgent need to conduct systematic research on the occurrence characteristics, concentration levels and environmental risks of new pollutants in the basin. Therefore, conducting investigation and monitoring of new pollutants in key industries, typical industrial parks, drinking water sources, and other key areas in the basin, followed by risk assessment, identifying the emission list of new pollutants in typical industries, and forming environmental risk control measures and prevention and control plans for new pollutants in the basin are important links to ensure environmental safety in the basin. Conducting research on risk prevention and control of new pollutants in the Yellow River Basin is of great significance.

The project objective is to carry out environmental investigation and monitoring of new pollutants in key industries, typical industrial parks, and important drinking water sources in the Yellow River Basin, and to establish a database for investigation and risk assessment of new pollutants in key industries and important drinking water sources; Identify new pollutants in typical industries in the Yellow River Basin, construct a list of potential new pollutant emission sources in typical industries, complete environmental risk assessments for 20-30 new pollutants, and clarify the distribution map of environmental risk for new pollutants in the Yellow River Basin; Propose a list of key control measures for new pollutants in the Yellow River Basin, and carry out pilot projects for new pollutant control in key enterprises and industrial parks to form environmental risk prevention and control solutions.
